Country Music Artist Moriah Domby Talks New EP
Originally from Oregon, Moriah Domby is a country music artist who decided to pursue her passion for songwriting and performing after working in music publishing. She earned a Music Business degree from MTSU but chose to focus on her own artistry instead of working on the business side of things.
Moriah is currently in the studio finishing her soon to be released new EP, so I asked her about the project, her upcoming gigs like the Southern Women’s Show in Nashville, as well as her plans for the future. BH: Tell me about your upcoming EP and the songs that will be on it.
MD: The songs on this EP are inspired by little moments from where I am in life right now. The song “Authentic” is about staying true to yourself at a time where we’re all worried about the persona we show on social media. “Life decisions" is a really fun, quirky song I wrote with my friend Sean Swenson. We were talking about how right now, there are many people in our lives who are all on unique paths. It’s a fun way of saying that there is no one set way to live your life and be happy. There are also some love songs on this EP, which are melody driven – we tried to have something for everyone on there. |
BH: In terms of musical influences, who are artists that you grew up listening to?
MD: I grew up listening to singer/songwriters like Carole King and Joni Mitchell, bands like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and The Eagles as well as all kinds of country music. I’ve always been the most inspired by women in country like Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Faith Hill and Martina McBride. They have such amazing voices and are incredible storytellers. I am also a huge fan of Amy Grant. Her songwriting and voice have such a comforting way about them.
BH: Are most of your songs based on personal experiences?
MD: Yes, I usually write from personal experiences. My songs range from word-for-word stories to lyrics based on feelings at a certain time. All of them are personal to me, though. When I write, even when it’s for someone else, I try to put myself in a scenario and feel my way through it. It helps the lyrics feel more organic to me.

BH: What would you say to young girl fans who want to make a living as a full-time musician?
MD: Seems simple, but I would say that the most important thing is to stay true to yourself. Stay humble and excited for others, keep your feet on your own path, but stay aware and open to new opportunities and the possibility that your success might come to you in unexpected ways. Everyone has their own unique abilities and gifts, and it can be easy to get distracted by what others are or aren’t doing. But if you stay true to your own gifts, it’s easier to stay focused on your goals. Work hard, be kind, stay grateful, and I would say most importantly, keep doing it for the love of it and you’ll find your way.
BH: What do you hope your fans will get from listening to your music?
MD: I hope it makes them feel something, whether it’s reflecting on something from their past, or just making them smile. I love music because of the way it touches my heart, so I hope I can do that for others.

BH: Are there plans to do any touring in 2019?
MD: Yes! I will be in Nashville at the Southern Women’s Show on Sunday, March 10 performing at the Music City Center on their main stage at 5:30 p.m. From there, I’ll be touring the southeast, specifically Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina before heading up north. I add new dates all the time and keep my website and social pages updated so my fans and followers know where to find me.
